played by Gene Wilder in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
A quirky children's icon who can barely disguise his contempt for humanity, Willy Wonka plays almost as a villain.  His apparent glee at tormenting those who annoy him only heightens the surprise we feel when he turns out to be a decent, loving man.  Gene Wilder plays both aspects of this complicated man with complete conviction.
