played by Kevin Spacey in The Usual Suspects
Screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie took the age-old archetype of the stool pidgeon and turned it on its head.  As Verbal Kint, Kevin Spacey displays wit, suspiscion, and a surprising vulnerability.  Of course, once we find out what Verbal really is, these elements only add to the shock and betrayal we feel.
