played by Dustin Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy
Joe Buck and Ratso Rizzo are like Oliver and the Artful Dodger but, without a Fagin for them to follow or rebel against, they are lost.  Ratso far more so.  Paradoxically, he is fiercely independent and very much needs someone to take care of him.  Despite his repugnance, that’s just what you want to do.
