The story of Eddie Felson's acquisition of character is a tragic one, as Felson finds himself sacrificing everything to be the best pool player in the land.  Much to his surprise and chagrin, being the best doesn't mean much when you've given up the things that truly matter.  This lesson resonates deep within him, and the audience.
